Frequently asked questions
Is an electronic signature from DocuSend legally binding?
Yes, for the vast majority of business documents. In Canada, electronic signatures are recognized under PIPEDA Part 2 and each province's electronic commerce legislation, such as Ontario's Electronic Commerce Act, 2000. In the US they are covered by the ESIGN Act and UETA, and in the EU they are simple electronic signatures under eIDAS. A few documents, such as wills, some powers of attorney and certain land transfers, still require wet ink or special formalities in many provinces.
Do signers need a DocuSend account?
No. Each signer receives a private link. They open it, agree to sign electronically, complete their fields and adopt a signature. It takes about a minute on a phone or a computer.
What proves who signed and when?
Every completed envelope ends with a certificate of completion. It records each signer's name, email, IP address and device, when they viewed, consented and signed, and a SHA-256 fingerprint of the original document.
Can a PDF be changed after it is signed?
Not without detection. DocuSend stores a SHA-256 fingerprint of every sealed PDF. Upload a copy at docusend.ca/verify to confirm it matches the original record exactly.
Where is my data stored?
Documents and records are stored in Canada, in Montréal (AWS ca-central-1). They are encrypted in transit and at rest, and are served only through signed-in sessions or a signer's private link.
Which file types can I send?
PDF, PNG and JPG. Several files can be added to one envelope and DocuSend combines them into a single document in the order you choose.
